Standard Japanese Manga Formats Explained

Japanese publishing houses adhere to standardized paper trims that differ significantly from Western comic formats:

  • Tankobon (112 × 176 mm): Standard paperback format for collected serialized manga. Aspect ratio 1 : 1.57.
  • B6 Edition (128 × 182 mm): Slightly wider format common for seinen titles and deluxe graphic novels. Aspect ratio 1 : 1.42.
  • A5 Kanzenban (148 × 210 mm): Deluxe complete editions featuring heavier paper stock and original color chapters.
  • B5 Weekly Magazine (182 × 257 mm): Large weekly magazine format used by Weekly Shonen Jump and Weekly Shonen Sunday.

The 3-Box Printing Rule

1. Trim Box: The finished cut dimensions of the physical book.
2. Bleed Box: Trim dimensions + 3mm on all four sides (+6mm total) for edge-to-edge artwork.
3. Safe Live Area: Trim dimensions minus 5mm on all four sides to prevent dialogue bubbles from getting cropped.
