Best DPI for Manga Scanning: Why 600 DPI is the Screentone Standard

1. Optical Physics & The Nyquist-Shannon Theorem

In digital signal processing, the Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem states that to digitally capture an analog signal without aliasing distortion, the digital sampling frequency must be strictly greater than twice the highest frequency component present in the original signal ($f_{sample} > 2 \times f_{max}$).

When applied to optical scanning of printed comic art, the "signal" consists of tiny printed halftone screentone dots and ultra-fine nib ink lines.

2. Manga Halftones: Understanding Screen Frequency (LPI)

Commercial manga artists apply pre-printed adhesive sheets or digital tone layers (traditionally Deleter or IC screentones). These screentones are measured in Lines Per Inch (LPI):

  • Coarse Background Shading: 40 – 50 LPI
  • Standard Skin & Clothing Tones: 60 – 65 LPI
  • Delicate Gradients & Sky Tones: 75 – 85 LPI

3. Why 300 DPI Produces Destructive Moiré

At 300 DPI, an optical scanner has an effective sampling spacing of $1/300 \approx 0.0033$ inches. If scanning a 65 LPI tone, each printed dot is sampled by only:

Sampling Ratio = 300 DPI / 65 LPI ≈ 4.61 pixels per halftone dot

Because 4.61 is a non-integer, fractional sampling rate, the optical sensor samples varying fractions of the black ink dot and the surrounding white paper across each cycle. This creates a beat frequency—a low-frequency visual oscillation that manifests as swirling wavy bands known as **moiré**.

The Problem with Software Descreening Filters

Many consumer scanner drivers offer a "Descreen" checkbox. This filter simply blurs the entire image using a low-pass spatial convolution matrix. While it reduces moiré waves, it irreversibly smears dialogue text, hair highlights, and sharp pen strokes.

4. Optical Standards Comparison: 300 vs 600 vs 1200 DPI

DPI Setting Pixels Per 65 LPI Dot Moiré Resistance Archival Recommendation
300 DPI ~4.6 pixels Severe Risk Acceptable only for color covers without halftones.
600 DPI ~9.2 pixels Immune The Universal Standard. Halftone dots captured as individual shapes.
1200 DPI ~18.5 pixels Perfect Archival Line Art Master (1-bit monochrome thresholding).

5. Optical vs. Interpolated Software DPI

Always verify that your scanner software is using **true optical resolution**. Low-cost scanners frequently claim "up to 9600 DPI" via marketing claims; however, their physical optical sensor only resolves 300 or 600 DPI, with software guessing intermediate pixels via bicubic interpolation. Software interpolation adds file size bloat without adding real optical information.
