About Our Project

About Scan Manga

Scan Manga is an independent technical resource dedicated to the science of digitizing physical comic books, understanding optical resolution, and preserving manga print art.

Why Scan Manga Exists

Physical Japanese manga volumes are printed using distinct mechanical processes: industrial web-offset presses, low-cost pulp newsprint, and high-frequency printed screentones ranging between 60 and 85 lines per inch. When collectors and archivists attempt to digitize these physical pages using standard office scanners, they frequently encounter severe technical obstacles:

  • Destructive Moiré Interference: Scanning at ordinary 300 DPI creates visual harmonic waves across halftone shading, ruining artwork aesthetics.
  • Spine Binding Damage: Forcing tight Tankobon bindings flat against glass often breaks binding glue, permanently damaging physical books.
  • Gutter Shadow Blurring: Shallow-depth CIS (Contact Image Sensor) scanners turn book gutters into black, unreadable gradients.

Scan Manga was built to provide rigorous mathematical calculators and technical guidance to solve these problems.

What We Cover

Mathematical Calculators

Pixel dimensions, optical DPI density, aspect ratios, and compression storage estimation for standard Japanese publishing trims.

Privacy-First Image Inspection

In-browser diagnostic tools that check local scan files without ever uploading user images to external servers.

Hardware Engineering

Technical comparisons between CCD optical focal depth and CIS sensors, edge-scanner ergonomics, and color calibration.

Archival Preservation

Best practices for lossless master storage in TIFF and PNG, descreening techniques, and long-term digital maintenance.

Our Ethical & Legal Commitment

Zero Piracy Stance

Scan Manga does not host, mirror, translate, scrape, or distribute copyrighted manga chapters or digital comics. We are firmly an educational and image preparation toolkit.

Manga is created through the extraordinary dedication of mangaka artists, assistants, and editors. We actively promote and link to official, licensed manga distributors—such as Viz Media, MANGA Plus by Shueisha, and BookWalker—where fans can support creators directly.

Editorial Methodology & Standards

All calculations and formulas provided on Scan Manga are grounded in optical physics, digital signal processing principles (specifically the Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem), and documented Japanese printing standards. We openly disclose mathematical formulas, measurement tolerances, and limitations across all our calculator tools.
