Hardware Configurator Interactive Guide

Interactive Manga Scan Settings Guide

A practical decision helper for scanner software configuration: find optimal optical DPI, bit-depth, histogram levels, and spine gutter handling based on your hardware and paper condition.

Tailored Scanner Software Configuration

Recommended Settings
Optical Resolution
600 DPI
Never interpolate in software
Color Mode & Bit Depth
8-bit Grayscale (256 shades)
Captures subtle ink gradations
Descreening Filter
Off / Disabled
Preserves crisp linework
Archival Format
Lossless TIFF (Deflate) or PNG
Never scan directly to lossy JPEG

Spine Gutter Advisory:

CCD sensors feature deep focal depth (~5mm). Pages curving into the book spine gutter remain crisp and sharply focused without severe shadowing.

Histogram & Levels Advice:

Adjust black point to ~15 and white point to ~240 to clean up grey newsprint background without clipping delicate crosshatching.

Why Scanner Configuration Matters

Most scanner driver software (such as Epson Scan, Canon IJ Scan Utility, or VueScan) defaults to settings optimized for glossy color photos or text office documents. Applying these defaults to Japanese manga results in washed-out screentones, clipped crosshatching, or severe moiré bands.

Use the configurator above to obtain precise parameters tailored to your exact manga paper condition and hardware sensor.

Core Golden Rules of Manga Scanning

  • Rule 1: Never Use Hardware Descreening for B&W Manga: Descreening filters apply Gaussian blur that ruins delicate inking. Scan at 600 DPI to preserve the dots naturally.
  • Rule 2: Capture in 8-bit Grayscale, Not 1-bit Threshold: Scanning in 8-bit grayscale records 256 tonal steps, preserving sub-pixel anti-aliasing needed for rotating and deskewing.
  • Rule 3: Respect Sensor Focal Depth: CCD sensors maintain focus 3-5mm off the glass, making them ideal for bound volumes. CIS sensors blur unless pressed completely flat.
