Screentone-Safe High Res 600 DPI is the gold standard for black & white manga. It cleanly resolves 60-85 LPI halftones without moiré pattern interference.

How This Resolution Calculator Works

When digitizing a physical manga page, optical resolution determines how many discrete sensor measurements are captured per inch of paper. Standard Japanese manga trim formats (Tankobon, B6, and A5) are printed with fine halftone screentones that require precise optical sampling to avoid geometric distortion.

This calculator converts your physical page dimensions from millimeters, centimeters, or inches into exact pixel widths and heights, while forecasting image buffer RAM required by photo editing software like GIMP or Photoshop.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Select Your Manga Format: Choose a standard Japanese preset (Tankobon for standard Shonen/Shojo, B6 for Seinen/Wide, A5 for Kanzenban) or select "Custom Dimensions" to enter measurements manually.
  2. Choose Your Measurement Unit: Select millimeters (mm), centimeters (cm), or inches (in). Japanese manga is natively designed in millimeters.
  3. Select Target Optical DPI: Choose 600 DPI for standard screentone-safe archiving, 1200 DPI for pure line art preservation, or 300 DPI for fast web reading previews.
  4. Review & Copy Output: Check the calculated pixel matrix and click "Copy Dimensions" to paste the target canvas size directly into your scanning software.

Mathematical Formulas & Methodology

The calculator executes the following mathematical sequence:

// 1. Metric to Imperial Normalization
Width in Inches = Width in Millimeters / 25.4
Height in Inches = Height in Millimeters / 25.4

// 2. Pixel Calculation
Pixel Width = round( Width in Inches × Optical DPI )
Pixel Height = round( Height in Inches × Optical DPI )

// 3. Pixel Density & Aspect Ratio
Total Pixels = Pixel Width × Pixel Height
Megapixels   = round( Total Pixels / 1,000,000, 2 )
Aspect Ratio = 1 : round( Pixel Height / Pixel Width, 2 )

// 4. Memory Working Buffer (24-bit RGB canvas × 3.5 undo multiplier)
Raw Megabytes = ( Total Pixels × 3 ) / ( 1024 × 1024 )
RAM Required  = round( Raw Megabytes × 3.5 )

Tolerances & Accuracy Notice

Manufacturing tolerances in commercial bookbinding result in minor physical page trim variances (up to ±1.5 mm). Always measure your specific volume with a millimeter-accurate ruler if exact pixel alignment is critical.
